Bishop's Castle retrains a layout dreamed up in the twelfth century. The Castle once stood at the top of the town, behind where The Castle Hotel is now situated, and looked over a main thoroughfare running down to the church. A series of much smaller lanes crosses this main street to complete the grid

Whilst standing in this vicinity, take a look down Salop Street at the Three Tuns brewery and public house, dating from times when most public houses brewed their own.
Until recently this sturdy survivor has lived through the recent decades of large scale brewery mergers, a miracle in times of a flood of global lager products. Bishop's Castle has always been a significant borderland township, with markets attracting both English and Welsh over the centuries. It was at one time the smallest borough in England, known as a Rotten Borough in that its limited

population did not warrant two members of parliament. Ironically, in 1820 all four candidates in the election polled a mere 87 votes each and in the absence of any other procedure were all duly elected! From 1832 onwards the political status of Bishop's Castle has declined considerably
