LIVING HISTORY... ... in the Shropshire Hills. Experience daily life on an upland farm at the turn of the century. The waggoner and his team of heavy horses work the land with vintage farm machines. Each day, in the cottage, the farmer's wife goes about her chores; cooking on the range, baking bread and doing laundry. BLACKSMITH TO DAIRYMAID Every day you can see milking by hand and butter making in the dairy. There are weekly visits from the wheelwright, farrier and blacksmith, and in the woodsman's hut rakes and gate hurdles are made. These daily demonstrations of rural crafts complete the picture of estate-life a hundred years ago. THE FARMER'S YEAR In the fields the farming year unfolds with ploughing, sowing and harvesting. We use the Norfolk Four Course crop rotation system. Look out for lambing, shearing, cider making and threshing with steam and flail ANIMALS AND THEIR YOUNG Children will love the cows, pigs, poultry and sheep in the farmyard and fields. There are Longhorn cattle, Tamworth pigs and Shropshire sheep among the rarer breeds. SHOPPING ON THE FARM Fresh Produce, country crafts, souvenirs and ice cream.
